Elia Mauceri – Giudizio particolare

Ispirandosi al Giudizio Universale di Beato Angelico, Elia Mauceri ne isola e ne svuota il centro simbolico.
Nel dipinto quattrocentesco, un sepolcro aperto segna il luogo da cui i corpi sono risorti, è il segno della promessa di salvezza, circondato dal brulicare degli eletti e dei dannati.
Nel lavoro di Mauceri, invece, di quell’umanità non resta traccia: il sepolcro è ancora aperto, ma nessuno si è presentato. Invece di un raduno cosmico dell’umanità, assistiamo a un’assenza collettiva dove il drago, lo scheletro e il cipresso appaiono come uniche reliquie sopravvissute di un mito, come presenze sospese e tragicomiche.

In the fifteenth-century painting, an open tomb marks the place from which bodies have already risen — the silent sign of a promise of salvation, surrounded by the swarming of the blessed and the damned.
In Mauceri’s work, by contrast, no trace of that humanity remains: the tomb is still open, yet no one has appeared.
Instead of a cosmic gathering of humankind, we witness a collective absence, where the dragon, the skeleton, and the cypress stand as the only surviving relics of a myth — presences at once suspended and tragicomic.
